Make a Mug with Amy Dooley | Mug Build Section

  • Studio 89 89 Vineyard Avenue Highland, NY, 12528 United States (map)

Part 1-Mug Build

Learn how to make a slab built mug in this two part class. Learn basic slab building techniques such as rolling slabs and joining parts. The first class is where you build your piece. The pieces need to dry fully and be fired (process takes two weeks). Then come back to glaze your mug. If you cannot make the second class email us to set up a more convenient time.

Clay is most commonly fired twice. The first time is called bisque firing and makes your piece ready for glaze where it is fired a second time.

There will be multiple choices of colors and textures available to try.

One of the exciting things about ceramics is that there is a lot of variability. Pieces don’t come out the same every time. Occasionally, there is cracking and breakage, or glaze defects. We do our best to avoid issues by addressing as much as possible during the class. We also use commercially made glazes for more consistency. But there are no guarantees. Even the most experienced ceramicists have issues with a certain percentage of their work. This class is more about learning the process than having a specific outcome.

Please arrive 15 minutes early. If street parking is full, there are 3 parking lots. One between Studio 89 and Sal’s Place. Another is on Milton Ave. near Hudson Ale Works and the 3rd is on Vineyard Ave. just past Main St. behind the church.

Remember to wear clothes that can get dirty. Class includes both firing and glazing your piece.
